Hutch Makeover finally finished
Another Thrift Store Hutch Makeover
I love thrift store furniture makeovers! The furniture is at the right price and you can let your creativity take over. I bought this hutch for $50 at my favorite thrift store. Instead of sticking to Behr paint like I do with all my projects, I decided to try Devine Color and peel/stick wallpaper from Target. I'm very happy with the results!
Here are the before pictures of my $50 Hutch. The color of the hutch wasn't my favorite but I liked the faux Bamboo trim and the Rattan weaving around the cabinet and doors.
Before I started the priming and painting part of my project, I took the time and removed all the hardware off the hutch. I took all the hinges, screws and other hardware pieces and gave them a bath in Paint brush cleaner to remove all the old paint so everything looks brand new. Brush cleaner will remove any latex and oil based paint.
I used my new favorite oil based primer Zinsser and brushed on the primer to the hutch. I brushed on the primer instead of spraying because the Zinsser primer is an oil based primer. Its best to brush on oil based primer instead of spraying with the spray gun.
After the primer dried, I sprayed on the Devine Color paint in Devine Lighting. After I sprayed I went back through the cabinet and brushed on paint in a few spots to make sure the detail stood out.
I measured the width and the height for each panel on the back of the cabinet. After measuring the paper I used an L-square to make sure my lines were straight before I cut.
The peel/stick wallpaper is great for first timers like myself. I was able to adjust the paper once I removed some of the backing without making a mess of the paper. Peel and stick wallpaper takes time and patience to put on. You need to use a flat edge to push the air bubbles out as you push the paper down. I this case I used a credit card to smooth out the paper.
I took all the hardware and put it in a cup, poured in the brush cleaner and let the cleaner do it's magic removing old paint.
I decided to paint the handles of the hutch the same color as the wallpaper instead the hutch. I used Devine color Devine Horizon, I bought. A great investment I have made was going out and buying the Painters pyramids shown in the above picture. They hold up your pieces of furniture so they dry evenly and you can paint around the item.
After the painting ( primer & painting), wallpaper, hardware cleaning and the time to put all the hardware back on the hutch it looks great in my spare bedroom.
Beautiful job Jamie! I can't wait to see what you put in it!
